“The fantastic sound of this BIS recording enhances the music of Ralph Vaughan Williams. The enormous sound masses can fully unfold, which is a real pleasure for the listener, especially since the pastoral 5th Symphony is played by the grandiose Philharmonia Orchestra. However, the interpretation by Michael Collins does not come close to the reference recordings. Although he gets along excellently with the colours of Vaughan Williams’ music, the symphony lacks the necessary bite. Collins then succeeds better with Gerald Finzi’s Clarinet Concerto, which he both plays and conducts. Here, too, the colours remain the most distinctive feature. The soft character of the work, with its interesting clarinet part, is optimally realized by the strings of the Philharmonia Orchestra.” ****
